How to Reduce 3D Model File Size
Reducing the file size of your models will allow them to load faster, have more of them in your scenes and your collection. Most 3D models you find won't be optimised for use on the web, where large files are more of a problem.
To reduce your model sizes there are some great free tools that make compressing existing models easy. Gm Viewer is a great free tool, and Optimize GLB is great for converting files in bulk, but you will have to pay once you pass your free quota.
GM Viewer - Free tool - đź”— visit
Gm Viewer is an amazing open source tool created by GitHubDragonFly, which you can use to quickly reduce the file size of your models.
Tips on how to use GM Viewer:
- Visit Gm Viewer
- Click the “Browse” button at the top right, and file the file you want to compress.
- Choose “Webp” on the far right drop down select box, Choose the smallest number you are happy with in the middle drop down select box.
usually 512 or 756 works well here, but it depends on your model - This value will be the resolution of the model's texture. - Finally, choose “GLB_d” in the “export” drop down select, this will then download your compressed model.
...and thats it, you can try upload the file here again and you will see the file size is likely a lot smaller, so you will use less of your limits!
Optimize glb - bulk compression - đź”— visit
Optimize is a pay for tool that gives you some free credits, if you are trying to compress many models at one go it is significantly faster and easier. Optimize GLB has a nice UI that can guide you on how to use it effectively. General Tips for Reducing GLB File Sizes
If you are creating your own models or are somewhat comfortable with 3D modeling software like blender, there are a few best practices that can significantly reduce file sizes
- Use Draco compression: Many 3D tools support exporting with Draco, which can significantly reduce mesh size.
- Compress textures: Textures are often the largest part of the model and hence are the easiest way to reduce file sizes. Be sure to use smaller resolutions and convert to efficient formats like .webp.
- Simplify geometry: Reduce polygon count or decimate high-poly models when possible. Delete unused assets: Remove hidden meshes, unused materials, or leftover animation data.
