Terrain Paint

Cover the ground with Paint: grass, cobbles, sand, rock and more, blended into each other with a soft brush. It works like a brush: click and drag on the ground. Paint follows any hills you sculpt.

  1. Click Paint in the bottom toolbar.
  2. Pick a category, then a material.
  3. Drag across the ground to paint.

Paint the ground

Opening Paint, picking the Paving category and Cobbles, and dragging a winding cobblestone path across the grass
Pick a material, then drag to paint.
  • Click Paint, pick a category, then a material. Until you pick one, the brush shows a question mark.
  • Paint follows the shape of your hills, and steep slopes keep their texture without stretching.
  • Materials have real relief: where two meet, stones and pebbles show through the edge rather than a flat fade.
  • In this scene, at the top of the panel, lists the materials you've used. Click one to paint with it again.

Soft edges and blending

Raising Softness, lowering Strength, picking sand and painting over the edge of a dirt patch so the two blend
A soft, light brush blends one material into another.
  • Size is the brush's width in metres. [ and ] make it smaller and bigger.
  • Softness: low for crisp edges, high for a gentle fade. Paint always stays inside the circle.
  • Strength: low builds paint up gradually over a few passes.
  • Paint a soft brush over an edge to blend two materials.

Paint to grid

Turning on Paint to grid with the grid shown and painting a stone path one square at a time
Paint to grid fills whole grid squares.
  • Click Paint to grid to fill whole 1 m grid squares.
  • Show grid shows the squares.
  • The brush sliders rest while it's on.

Materials in a scene

  • A scene can use 10 textured materials, or as many as you like with Premium. The six plain colours are always free to use.
  • Scenes painted before materials keep their painting as the base. Paint over it, or pick it from In this scene to paint it back.
  • On a phone or a slow computer, set Ground detail to Low in the Effects menu (the sparkle button, top right).

On a phone or tablet

  • Drag with one finger to paint.
  • Two fingers move the camera. Putting a second finger down mid-stroke cancels the stroke.
  • The panel folds down to a small bar showing the material and brush size. Tap its arrow, or drag the bar up, to open it again.
